15 Questions you may have about Invisalign – Answered!

15 Questions you may have about Invisalign – Answered!

Are you thinking about transforming your smile? Invisalign might be right for you. We’re here to answer a few questions you may have about Invisalign before you come in for a consultation.

1. When should I see an orthodontist for Invisalign?

It is important to think on your own about your smile goals, however, we all have a habit of overthinking sometimes. Dr. Alvarado is an orthodontist with years of experience – let her do the thinking about your smile. You may have heard rumors about Invisalign only working for minimal changes, however, Invisalign has come a long way and can now treat almost the same cases as braces. We will help you sort through all those ideas and preconceptions to land on your best plan for treatment! We’re here to help you meet your smile goals, let us do the work.

Schedule a free consultation today!

2. How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Just like traditional braces, Invisalign treatment is different for each person. Invisalign technology does allow for your clear aligner treatment to work just as fast as traditional braces.

3. What does it feel like to have Invisalign?

Although no one will be able to see your trays like with braces, you may still experience some discomfort. Some Invisalign patients report discomfort during the first few weeks on treatment. This varies greatly depending on each person, treatment plan, and smile.

Some people may experience a slight difficulty speaking normally in the first 2 weeks of wearing their trays. Just like anything else, practice makes perfect! Remember that it is very unlikely for the people around you to even notice such a difference in your speech. After getting accustomed to the trays for up to 2 weeks, you will go back to sounding just like yourself!

4. Is Invisalign custom made?

Great question! Invisalign became possible with advancements in 3D printing technologies. Dr. Alvarado works together with Invisalign to custom design each aligner for your teeth and smile goals. After we scan your mouth with our 3-D scanner, the Invisalign lab creates a series of aligners that you will change out about every 1-2 weeks. The aligners are made based on a personalized treatment plan created by your orthodontist.

5. How does having Invisalign affect my everyday life?

Compared to braces – barely at all! You can eat and drink what you want, play sports, practice your instrument – life goes on as usual. To eat and drink, simply remove your aligner. When you’re done eating and drinking, brush and floss and put your aligners back in. If you play sports, you don’t have to worry about braces injuring your mouth. We see no downsides here!

6. What is the day-to-day maintenance of Invisalign?

During Invisalign treatment, you will need to brush and floss more often – every time you eat. When brushing your teeth, it is also best practice to brush your aligners as well. This helps your aligners stay clear, prevents murky build-up, and damage to your teeth.

7. What are Invisalign buttons?

Invisalign buttons are small tooth-colored bumps placed on your teeth. These buttons help hold your trays in place and guide your teeth to get a more precise and straight smile.

8. Are rubber bands sometimes used with Invisalign?

Every Invisalign case is different, and occasionally some may require orthodontic rubber brands, used in a similar manner as with metal braces. Rubber bands are used to improve your bite – or the fit of your upper and lower teeth. A correct bite is not only important in a straight smile, but in eating and overall health.

9. How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?

You have a couple of options for cleaning your aligners. First, you can brush your aligners with your toothbrush when you brush your teeth. Remove your aligners and brush the inside and outside of your trays. Be sure not to use whitening toothpaste! Although this may sound counterintuitive, whitening toothpaste contains abrasive ingredients that can damage your trays. You can also soak your aligners in a cleaning solution. Invisalign provides a cleaning crystal that you dissolve in water and drop your aligners into. Never use other cleaning products or solutions. Contact us if you need to purchase additional cleaning crystals.

Plymouth Orthodontics Toothbrush

10. How am I supposed to brush my teeth in public?

This is a slight adjustment to get used to but it really is super important to make sure you and your teeth are happy with the results. Our tip is to stash toothbrushes everywhere! Your work, purse, gym bag, car, etc.

11. Can I whiten with my Invisalign Aligners?

Ding ding, winner! Indeed you can. You already have to have your aligners in all day, might as well add some whitener in there for a portion of it! Our team is happy to provide guidance and suggestions on how to best whiten and straighten at the same time! Talk about convenience.

12. How do I take out my Invisalign Aligner in public?

At the beginning of each set of aligners, it can be a little harder to remove them because they’ll fit tightly. If you’re uncomfortable wrestling your aligners in public, simply step into a bathroom. We actually recommend this course of action because you should always wash your hands before using them to take your aligners out or put them back in.

13. Am I too old for Invisalign?

No, never! The preconception that orthodontic treatment is only for teenagers is not true! Every person at every age deserves to be happy with their smile. Invisalign is great for any age.

14. How is Invisalign different from at-home treatment?

New at-home orthodontic treatment might seem intriguing but they aren’t superior to traditional Invisalign. With traditional Invisalign, you get all the benefits of having invisible aligner trays, with the supervision of an actual orthodontist that you can actually speak to! That’s right, with other at-home companies all contact is virtual and sometimes quite spotty. When you start Invisalign treatment with Plymouth Orthodontics you have a team to email or call if you have questions and access to an actual office if you’re really in a pinch.

Aside from more contact with an Orthodontist along the way, your Invisalign journey is planned by Plymouth’s own, Dr. Alvarado, an actual orthodontist trained for years in straightening teeth, not a dentist in another state. Patients of these at-home companies commonly have trouble getting their impressions exactly right, losing valuable time, money, and even possibly jeopardizing their entire journey to a straight smile. Invisalign aligners are made out of the highest quality materials and customized to fit your teeth perfectly, every step of the way. PLUS, you get access to professional whitening to really make your smile shine!

15. About how much $$ does Invisalign cost?

We get it, the cost is something you have to think about. Many people think that since Invisalign is a more modern treatment, it’ll be more expensive. We offer free consultations where we develop your treatment plan and cost. At Plymouth Orthodontics, we file with MassHealth, Medicaid, and all private insurances. Our team wants to make sure you get the best treatment you can get so we work hard to find financing offers that work for you!

Plymouth Orthodontic’s Gives Back with Smiles

Help us give back with smiles

It has been a pleasure being able to see some of our patients in the office and so many virtually. Our focus is always to help our patients feel comfortable and safe – not only in our office, but in our community. However, we recognize that this is still a very difficult time for people all over the country. Dr. Alvarado and the team at Plymouth Orthodontics want to give back to our community during this trying time and have decided to team up with South Shore Community Action Council (SSCAC) in the fight against hunger. We ask for your support in referring your friends and family to join our practice. For each referral, we will donate $25 to SSCAC for a backpack full of food that will feed a Plymouth family for one week!

How to participate

More than 70% of people have a need for orthodontic care during their lifetime. If you have a friend or family member who is looking to change their smile, have them come see us now. When they do, they’ll feed a Plymouth family for an entire week! When they schedule their appointment with Plymouth Orthodontics, just have them give your name to the office staff. We will send you an email when we make the donation and keep you updated on other ways you can help.

Dr. A and South Shore Community Action Council

“Making a difference in individuals’ lives while also being able to feed local families is something that I am so excited to be able to do,” says Dr. Alvarado. “The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us in so many ways. As we start to go back to normal I look forward to welcoming more patients and helping feed our communities that are struggling from food loss!”

South Shore Community Action Council has been working for 18 years in the fight against hunger, feeding seniors, adults and children. Fighting hunger and promoting nutrition in nearly 20 communities on the South Shore, SSCAC’s Food Resources Program collects, stores and distributes non-perishable and fresh, perishable food to low-income, food-insecure people of all ages living on the South Shore. They support 14 different schools through the Backpack Food for Kids initiative, and have distributed 26,363 pounds of food – the equivalent of 20,279 meals!

Help us help our community! For each patient referral, we will provide $25 to SSCAC to fund a backpack of food to feed a Plymouth family for 7 days!

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Orthodontic Consultation

You or your child may feel overwhelmed or even nervous ahead of an orthodontic consultation. However, there is nothing to be worried about! It’s important to our team that you and your child feel comfortable at Plymouth Orthodontics, and we know how important your first visit can be. Our team will walk you through every step of the way on your child’s path to a straighter healthier smile!

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Orthodontic Consultation

A straight smile is so much more than just a matter of physical appearance. Crooked teeth can damage confidence, but they can also cause cavities, issues swallowing, trouble speaking, decreased oral health and other issues. A misaligned bite can cause jaw pain, and lead to cracked or worn down teeth and exposed nerves in the mouth. With today’s orthodontic options, it’s hard to know what option is best for your child.

What to Expect at Your Child's First Orthodontic Consultation in Plymouth, Massachusetts

Your child’s first appointment is an opportunity to get to know the Plymouth Orthodontics team and develop a personalized treatment plan. We’ll go over exactly what to expect, so that you and your child will feel prepared. When you come to Plymouth Orthodontics for your consultation, you’ll have a chance to meet our team and Dr. Alvarado, tour our office, and have your questions answered. We’ll discuss treatment options, timelines, insurance benefits, financial arrangements and any other concerns you or your child may have. This complimentary first appointment is pain-free and only lasts about an hour.

When is the right time for your child’s first orthodontic appointment?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age seven. This can seem very young to parents who had braces in their teens, but technologies have advanced to allow orthodontists to detect tooth and jaw issues much earlier and correct them early to prevent the need for more invasive procedures in the future. While your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect. The check-up may reveal that everything is developing normally, in which case we would recommend periodic check-ups with our office to continue monitoring growth. If the check-up reveals that there is a problem, we will guide you through the process and how to manage it. This may involve early orthodontic treatment or waiting until most or all of the permanent teeth transition and starting orthodontic treatment as an adolescent. For more information, click here.

Consultation Step 1: Meet the team & tour our office

After you check in at Plymouth Orthodontics, one of our treatment coordinators will greet you and give you a tour of the office. You can help yourself to coffee, tea, hot chocolate or water. There may even be a gift waiting for you or your child!

We’ll get to know you and your child, and find out your interests, lifestyle & schedule, treatment preferences & concerns and smile goals. This is all part of creating your child’s personalized treatment plan! At Plymouth Orthodontics, you and your child are more than just patients. You’re part of the Plymouth Orthodontics family! We can’t wait to get to know your child and support you both. We strive to make all of your appointments stress free and fun – from the first visit to the last.

Consultation Step 2: Exam & personalized treatment plan with Dr. Alvarado

Once you’ve gotten a tour of our office, we’ll review your child’s dental and medical history, examine their teeth, bite and smile, and perform an oral x-ray to assess their orthodontic needs. If your child hasn’t yet lost all their baby teeth, Dr. A will check their development and recommend treatment or periodic check-ups. The main focus of your consultation is to get more information about your child’s orthodontic needs and develop a treatment plan, so you’ll leave our office with plenty of information!

If your child does need orthodontic treatment, we’ll sit down to discuss a range of options and develop your child’s personalized treatment plan together. At Plymouth Orthodontics, we have many options to give your child a straight smile, so we’ll discuss braces, Invisalign and more.
Every patient is unique, and so are their treatment plans! During the creation of your child’s personalized treatment plan, we’ll take many different factors into consideration and get feedback from you and your child to make sure treatment will integrate well into your lives. You and your child will have plenty of time to get all your questions answered and make sure you feel confident moving to the next step in the orthodontic process.

Consultation Step 3: Set up financial arrangements & next appointment

After deciding on an ideal personalized treatment plan, we’ll help you figure out a financial arrangement that works for you and get your child’s first treatment appointment scheduled. Plymouth Orthodontics accepts and works with all dental insurances as well as MassHealth, so we will call your insurance for a complimentary benefits check to start.

Next, we figure out what payment options you’re interested in and go from there. At Plymouth Orthodontics, we offer flexible payment options to make straightening your smile easy! In addition to working with your insurance provider, Plymouth Orthodontics accepts all major credit cards and offers third-party financing through Care Credit. At your consultation, we can work together to find an arrangement that suits you and your family’s needs. Discounts are also available when multiple family members come to our office.

Then, we schedule your child’s next appointment where they will be getting appliances placed or getting scanned for Invisalign. The Plymouth Orthodontics team will explain the importance of good oral hygiene while the appliances are in place. They will also discuss how to care for the appliances and review proper dental hygiene procedures. Appointments are usually needed every 6-10 weeks to determine the progress of your teeth and to make adjustments.

What’s next: Braces or Invisalign?

  • If your child is straightening their smile with braces, their installation will take 1-2 hours. The installation process is not painful. However, your child may have discomfort a couple hours after they’re installed. For more information, check out our blog post about getting your child ready for braces!
  • If your child is straightening their smile with Invisalign, their scan may be performed at their initial consultation or at a separate appointment that works for you. With our state of the art 3D scanner, there’s no need for messy Impressions. Instead of a mouth full of putty, we can quickly scan your child’s smile to get the best and most accurate dental impressions, as well as a before and after look at their treatment results.

How to prepare for your appointment

Be sure to bring your new patient forms and insurance information with you to your appointment. Having your dentist send over dental records is also a good first step. MassHealth for Braces in Plymouth, Massachusetts

About MassHealth’s Coverage

There are six different MassHealth coverage types: Standard, CommonHealth, CarePlus, Family Assistance, Premium Assistance, and Limited. You can apply for coverage by completing a Massachusetts Application for Health and Dental Coverage and Help Paying Costs (also known as an ACA-3). Then, MassHealth will notify you about which program or coverage type you’re eligible for. The organization will offer you as much coverage as possible. Eligibility depends on factors such as income, citizenship, age, and special circumstances.

It’s also important to note that MassHealth only covers orthodontic treatment for children under 21. While some MassHealth coverage does include dental benefits for adults, the benefits don’t extend to braces or orthodontic treatment over the age of 21. If you’re a adult with MassHealth coverage looking to straighten your smile, our office can definitely assist you! In addition to filing with MassHealth, Medicaid, and all private insurances, we also offer flexible payment options, accept all major credit cards and offer third-party financing through Care Credit. At your free consultation, we’ll answer any questions you may have, create your personalized treatment plan and discuss financing options.

Once you get your MassHealth coverage, the next step is to schedule your free consultation at Plymouth Orthodontics! If you’re curious if your MassHealth coverage extends to orthodontic treatment, our office would be happy to check your benefits for you. We’ll answer any questions you may have, discuss your child’s smile goals, and find out your eligibility for MassHealth orthodontic coverage.

Free Braces with MassHealth

If you are approved for coverage by MassHealth, you will not have any out-of-pocket costs for your orthodontic treatment – Phase I treatment, records, braces, appliances, retainers and retention visits are all covered. At this time, MassHealth only covers traditional metal braces and does not cover Invisalign treatment. While braces aren’t invisible, they are a tried and true way to effectively straighten your smile. If you’d like, we can compare braces and Invisalign treatment and costs at your free consultation to help you make an informed choice.

If your child has previously been denied for MassHealth orthodontic coverage with another office, we would be happy to advocate for your family and resubmit for coverage at your complimentary consultation. If coverage is still denied, we’ll talk about your child’s need for orthodontic treatment, the costs and your other financing options to find a solution for your family.

Has your family recently moved and is looking for a new orthodontist? If your child already has MassHealth Braces on from a different office and you have moved close to our office, we will submit for transfer coverage at your consultation.

Q & A with Dr. Alvarado

Q: What inspired you to start your own business/become an orthodontist?
A: “Growing up I was initially fearful of going to the dentist. Over time this changed because I had wonderful experiences with my dentist and orthodontist. These experiences inspired me to become a dentist and then an orthodontist and provide exceptional service to my patients to help them overcome their fears and improve their self esteem. I love my profession and how I am able to create connections with my patients. My goal is to change their perceptions of going to the dentist/orthodontist and then make it a nice experience – not something to fear.”

Q: What was it that made you pick Plymouth, Massachusetts as the home for your new business?
A: “Some of our family members live locally and we always enjoyed visiting this area. We moved to Plymouth during the fall of 2017 and instantly loved being part of the community. We especially love the beautiful waterfront landscapes, the small town feel and access to both the city of Boston and Cape Cod within a short drive in either direction!”

Q: You grew up in Puerto Rico – what was your favorite part about living there?
A: There are too many to pick just one! Food, weather, landscape, nature/wildlife and beaches.

Q: When you’re not busy in the office, how do you like to spend your time?
A: Spending quality time with my husband and pup, Lexie, exploring our new hometown and state. My husband and I love food! So we are always checking out local restaurants and bakeries.
